nudity A woman is seen lying on a bed, bare breasts and back exposed. Her husband comes in and sees her there. A woman looks at herself in the mirror, bare breasts and bare behind exposed. It is not very clear because the mirror is misty, but still pretty visible. In a flashback, a woman lies nearly naked on a bed while her (ex) boyfriend injects drugs into her (see Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking section). Two people are seen having sex, nothing graphic, but there's a lot of movement and nudity. We see the man take the woman from behind. A man is bathing naked outside, seen from a distance. A woman sees him walking around naked from a distance. The next time he is seen, however, he is fully clothed. Two men take turns having sex with a woman in an alley. No nudity is shown and the scene is brief. There is a scene played for laughs where a woman empties her rucksack (which she has over packed) and she has packed lots of condoms. A man shows surprise and questions why she has and needs so many on a hike. She takes them out, but secretly keeps one and puts it in her pocket. There is a scene where a man and woman prepare to have sex. He takes his shirt off and gets onto a bed. She then undresses to her underwear and lies down on the bed. He starts kissing her and the scene cuts off there. No nudity. It's not as bad as the other sex scenes and not as vicious. The main character is shown to have become very careless and reckless at one point in her life. It is suggested that she slept with a lot of different men (who she didn't really know). A woman talks openly and confidently (and honestly) to a person in a tattoo parlour about her sex life with her husband and how she had affairs and cheated on him a lot, but that her and her husband never had sex. We find out that she was married and kept cheating on her husband. A man tries to chat up a young woman in a car and another woman calls him a "horny (b word)." In a flashback, a woman tells her best friend that she thinks she's pregnant and she doesn't really know who the father is, as she has had sex with a lot of men. She goes into the toilets and it is implied that she has taken a pregnancy test.
violence In the film's opening scene, a woman is in the woods taking off her shoe. We see that her foot is injured. She pulls her toenail forward. She is shown in pain. She removes the toenail offscreen. A man is seen threatening to punch a little girl. She has bruises around her eye and on her face. A man is shown to be quite violent. His wife has bruises around her face that show that he has been abusing her. He is not shown doing it. She has a swollen black eye at one point. Not too graphic. His violent tempers and abusive ways are discussed later between two characters (the ones that he abused). A horse is injured and its owners are forced to kill to put out of its misery. The horse is not shown as it is shot, but there is a brief scene where a woman is lying down in a tent after the flashback and blood runs down onto her head. Not that graphic. More of a metaphor. A woman sees a horse and because it brings back painful memories (see spoilers above) of something that happened before, she is sick on the ground. Not too gross and it's at night, so it's in the dark. A woman's body is shown bruised and marked because of her rucksack and the weight she has to carry. In some scenes, you can see the bruising on her back and arms and red marks on her shoulders. In a flashback, a man threatens a woman with a knife and holds it to her throat while he robs her. No gore or real violence. The main character's mother dies. Her eye is missing because she wanted to donate her cornea after she died. There is some blood there, but it is covered by a bandage (patch). Not gory. More upsetting than graphic.
profanity Many uses of the F-word. A couple of uses of the word b*stard when a woman curses her father and another woman calls a man a "horny (b word)." The main character swears to herself a lot. There are also a lot of heated arguments where the characters get angry and swear a lot at each other. One hand gesture. A woman sticks her middle finger up at a man after he robs her. She also curses God because of her misfortune. Several other minor profanities.
alcohol A woman is seen being injected with and smoking heroin in several flashbacks. In one, she describes how she felt when she first took it and she is shown as acting drunk and a bit crazily because of the side effects of taking drugs. In the present, she is sober and has presumably over come her addiction. Two men drink beer. They use beer cans (to hold water in). Two women drinks cocktails at a table. The main character is tempted when she thinks about the alcohol, trying to tell herself that she doesn't miss it. In a flashback, the main character's brother arrives in their house and she sounds drunk and upset. His voice slurs and he is said to have been out late when he gets home late, suggesting that he has been drinking. His sister gets mad at him and yells and swears at him. Young men share bottles of alcohol round between them in their tents. They are obviously very drunk and have a bottle each. Their voices slur as they laugh and drink.
frightening All of these are really spoilers: Most of the flashbacks are very sad, especially when the main character finds out that her mother is ill and may not have long left to live. Later on, there is an upsetting scene where she is told that her mother is dead. She is shown very upset and grieving, hugging and shaking her and crying. Probably the most upsetting part of the film. A tense part of the film is where a woman is walking in a hot, dry, desert-like place and runs out of water. She is dehydrated and desperate, licking moisture off her tent, until she finds some water. Just after this, there is a tense scene between a woman and a man. He keeps looking at her and makes inappropriate and intimidating comments. It is implied that he is considering raping her. The woman is very tense and scared of the man. The main character meets a lot of strangers during her journey and almost has to depend on strangers. She is very wary because of her past experiences. These scenes are quite tense because she doesn't now what's going to happen and she doesn't know whether she can trust them or not. The scenes of abuse and bad memories in the flashback scenes may be disturbing and sad to some, however most of them are very brief. There are mature themes in this that are sad at times. The film is all about journey and surviving in rough and harsh situations. At first, the main character struggles and the journey is quite tense.
